1st Round Qualifiers
From 1972-74, only 4 squads in 4A could qualify for the playoffs. Then, from 1975-86, that number was expanded to 8. Literally, a team had to
be perfect to qualify for the playoffs--hence the reason the 1985 squad that finished the season 8-1 didn't qualify! However, in 1987, the number of playoff qualifiers was
increased to 16 (and remained so for 20 years until the Iowa High School
Athletic Association doubled the number of playoff qualifiers to 32 starting
with the 2008 season).
The first team to lose in the 1st Round was in 1983 and that 8-1 team lost--for the second time that season--to eventual state champion Davenport Central
who finished the season 12-0. Four other Bettendorf squads
have lost in the 1st Round and since 1983, statistically speaking, Bettendorf has averaged about 2 losses in the 1st Round per decade. Let's hope, since the 2000's are half over, that
trend is broken.
